Spinach, tuna, Brazil nuts, brown rice, and red meat – all are considered healthy foods, but in excessive quantities, they can be harmful.
1. Spinach, beetroot, Swiss chard A lot has already been written about the benefits of these vegetables. They help with weight loss, are rich in vitamins, minerals... However, they contain a compound called oxalate, which can cause problems. If you are prone to kidney stones, oxalate stimulates the growth of intestinal bacteria, and these lead to the formation of kidney and gallstones. Instead of spinach, beetroot, and Swiss chard, rather eat cabbage.
2. Tuna Canned tuna can be an excellent source of protein and omega-3 fatty acids. Unfortunately, canned tuna also contains a lot of mercury, which can cause permanent damage to the nervous system and brain. This is especially dangerous for pregnant women. Nutritionists and doctors are not unanimous about how much tuna is still considered safe to eat, but on average, they recommend not eating more than 120 grams of canned fish per week.
3. Brazil nuts Brazil nuts are number 1 in terms of selenium content. This is a mineral that helps the body fight off viruses and bacteria. The problem arises if your body relies too much on selenium and doesn’t develop other defense mechanisms. For illustration: just 30 grams of nuts contain 7.7 times more selenium than the recommended daily amount. Of course, this doesn't mean you shouldn't eat Brazil nuts, just be careful not to add them to every dish. Rather, eat a handful of nuts as a snack 2 to 3 times per week.
4. Brown rice Brown rice is considered very healthy because the husk preserves the entire value of the grain. This is why it contains more fiber and slow carbohydrates. However, brown rice is also known for accumulating dangerous substances, particularly arsenic. Arsenic is considered highly carcinogenic and there is no known safe limit. Nutritionists recommend using quinoa instead of rice, and they particularly advise against any kind of rice or rice products for breakfast.
5. Red meat, white beans These are two of the best natural sources of iron, which plays an important role in providing oxygen to the muscles. Iron deficiency also causes fatigue, weakness, and nausea. Iron deficiency can also cause liver failure. Although excess iron is rare, blood results can be significantly worsened because of it. It's best to discuss with your nutrition advisor in order to put together a diet that balances your nutrition.
