An hour of running extends lifespan by 7 hours
Scientists have once again changed their opinion on the benefits of running.
At the end of the last century, jogging was the main form of recreation around the world. Then came the rise of fitness centers, as cardiologists and other doctors discovered that an hour of running before work could have negative effects on wellbeing and could even cause death. About 20 years ago, experts therefore started recommending fitness under the supervision of a trainer.
A recent large-scale study conducted at the Cooper Institute in Dallas has once again shown that running is very beneficial and even desirable. They measured that with every hour spent running, life is extended by 7 hours, and on average runners live 3 years longer than non-runners. However, the fact is that too much running is not good either. Doctors who until recently advocated for fitness now recommend 45 minutes to 1 hour of moderate running. The distance isn’t important, but rather the time you dedicate to recreation.
At the same time, we can’t ignore local trends. While the running trend has been declining worldwide, running has become the most popular sport among Slovenians. The popularity of running here has never been so high. This might be because the sport is inexpensive, can be done anywhere and anytime, does not require special infrastructure, and doesn’t need a coach.
But researchers from the Cooper Institute do warn that being a runner is not easy. You need to make sure your body is evenly hydrated throughout the day, eat a balanced diet, and pay particular attention to mineral levels: iron, magnesium, and others.
Evidently, now it’s time for dietary supplement manufacturers to increase their profits.
