We know several types of fasting. Usually, there are those that last all day and those that last a few hours (usually 16 or 12 hours per day). With both types, problems can arise if you have one of these issues:
1. Sleep problems Good sleep is important because it means the body can rest and regenerate. Only healthy people sleep soundly, well, and above all, in one go! If you go to bed hungry, your brain will be restless all night and any little thing will disturb you. In addition, you will wake up early, even though your body would still need a bit more rest. It is also unusual that your blood sugar level often drops, so you wake up repeatedly and feel anxious. Sleep disturbances are not good for regeneration. In addition, it’s important to consider one more fact—too little sleep. This is also not good and do not stay up late in front of the TV, because you are only harming yourself. Nothing is so important that you should stay up all night! 2. Eating disorders If you have any form of eating disorder, or even if it only seems like you might, you must be extremely careful. Improper eating habits or unusual eating behavior can cause more harm than good with fasting. Namely, with anorexia or bulimia nervosa, frequent overeating, or certain kinds of allergies, your health can significantly worsen, even permanently. It’s better to skip fasting and choose another day. It’s very important to listen to your body and know what it can handle (both physically and emotionally). Do not insist on fasting just because it is marked on your calendar. 3. You have done intense training or a similar activity for building muscle mass The essence of intense training is to build muscle mass, so it is even more important that the body has healthy proteins to replace dead cells. If there is no building material, the body will use old cells or even cells with defects. In such cases, fasting will only accelerate the growth of tumors, metastases, and other harmful centers. Nutritionists suggest that you do not fast for at least 4 hours after intense training—it's even better to take at least one day off. It is true that excess protein consumed during the day is stored as fat and is food for the organism, but make sure that you are not intentionally starving your body. If you want to persist with fasting, do not fast for more than 8 hours. 4. Digestive problems Did you have diarrhea, stomach cramps, or even mild poisoning the day before fasting? Believe that this has already greatly tired your body as it had to fight off an invader, so enforced fasting will not achieve the intended effect. Furthermore, many people notice problems after fasting (digestive disturbances, bloating) ... This is a strong sign that fasting is not the right solution for you. The transition from fasting back to normal eating should go smoothly and without problems. Fasting should not be a problem for sensitive intestines. If this happens to you, rather increase the number of meals and reduce their size accordingly. You will achieve more and in a healthier way. 5. You are doing intensive mental work that requires a lot of concentration The problem with mental work is that it’s not possible to fully activate the brain when you want to, and it’s even harder to stop it. And since the brain is the biggest energy consumer, you cannot have total control over it. Mental work is therefore extremely important in these cases: if you feel low on energy and tired, forget about fasting and rather eat something small instead. Remember that your brain will take energy when it needs it, even if it’s at the expense of your body! 6. You have diabetes People with diabetes already have issues with spikes and drops in blood sugar. During fasting, it's like you are deliberately challenging your immune system and testing how responsive it is. The pancreas is especially burdened. Therefore, people with blood sugar problems should never fast. For them, the correct solution is simply more smaller meals. 7. You are pregnant or breastfeeding Fasting during these periods strongly affects the child's development. The same goes if you are trying to conceive. Metabolic disturbances can significantly reduce fertility. Also, during pregnancy the body needs more energy, and you should not deny yourself that. 8. Medications There are medications that must be taken with food. If you take the medicine only, you may experience dizziness and nausea. This also applies to dietary supplements, especially with iron supplements. In such cases, severe anemia can occur. 9. You have a weak immune system or even a cancer diagnosis If you have any serious disease, do not experiment with fasting. A healthy immune system is more important than a slim appearance. Eat as many calories as you need. Rather, split the total into more meals (nutritionists suggest at least 5 meals per day). 10. Do not eat if you are not hungry The most important thing with any fasting is not the fast itself, but the time when you can eat. You must never eat by force! If you are not hungry, do not eat, and don’t stick to prescribed meal times if they do not follow your body’s rhythm. It is true that every fast requires a lot of willpower and persistence, but think about this when you can eat. Maybe fasting for a whole day is too much? Many switch from a 16-hour fast to a 12-hour fast? Many are satisfied if they don’t eat for 8 hours (mainly those who get uncontrollable hunger at night). In any case... Always adjust fasting to your body; the rules you have read somewhere are only guidelines and you do not have to follow them strictly. Your health is more important than appearance.
