One of the larger studies, conducted by the American Institute for Cancer Research, showed that daily intake of 10 grams of insoluble fiber reduces the risk of colon cancer by about 10%. One hundred grams of brown rice contains about 1.8 grams of fiber, which means that even one cup of cooked rice a day can contribute to a reduced risk of cancer.

Antioxidants in rice and their impact on health

Rice, especially brown rice, contains a lot of antioxidants, such as ferulic acid, phytic acid, and gamma-oryzanol. Antioxidants help fight free radicals, which damage cells and accelerate aging and the development of chronic diseases, including cancer.

A study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that whole grains, such as brown rice, have strong antioxidant properties that can help reduce the risk of developing certain types of cancer, including breast and prostate cancer.

Rice and Alzheimer’s disease

Brown rice contains neurotransmitters – substances that help transmit signals between brain cells. Some studies show these substances can help prevent Alzheimer’s disease and relieve its symptoms.

In a study conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health, it was found that people who regularly consume whole grains, including brown rice, have a 20% lower risk of developing cognitive disorders in old age. The reason lies in the combination of fiber, B-complex vitamins, and antioxidants, which protect the brain from damage.

Rice as part of a healthy diet

In addition to the mentioned benefits, rice contains other important nutrients that contribute to overall health:
  • Vitamin B1 (thiamine): important for the nervous system and energy metabolism.

  • Magnesium: essential for the function of muscles, nerves, and bones.

  • Proteins: rice contains about 7% protein, which is especially useful for vegetarians and vegans.

How to choose the healthiest rice?

There are several types of rice on the market, but some are more nutritionally rich than others. White rice is the most processed, so it contains less fiber and antioxidants, while brown, black, and red rice are much more nutritious.

If you want to take advantage of all the health benefits of rice, choose:
  • Brown rice, which contains more fiber and antioxidants.

  • Black rice, known as forbidden rice, which has the highest antioxidant content.

  • Red rice, which contains powerful antioxidants called anthocyanins.

Rice is not just a popular side dish, but a powerful ally for health. Regular consumption of rice can help protect the heart, improve digestion, reduce cancer risk, and even slow down brain aging. Whether you enjoy it as a main dish or a side, it is important to choose whole grain varieties that contain the most nutrients.
