How to Resist Sweets?
Does it often happen to you that despite your best intentions, you simply can’t say no to sweets? Especially when you’re tired or stressed… The solution is simple!

Resisting sweets is hard. We all know that sweet foods give the body energy… Or at least, apparent energy… However, there is a simple and natural method that helps you manage these cravings: aromatherapy. Research has shown that the scents of certain essential oils can help control appetite and reduce sweet cravings. Let’s see which oils are most effective for this.

Citrus Oils: Bergamot and Grapefruit

Essential oils of citrus fruits are known for their refreshing and invigorating aromas. Bergamot oil, for example, helps improve mood and can prevent emotional overeating. The scent of bergamot reduces the secretion of cortisol, the stress hormone, making it an ideal aroma in stressful situations.

Grapefruit essential oil has a similar effect. Its scent lifts your mood, provides energy, and reduces the need for snacks and sweets. Moreover, it can help activate enzymes that assist the body in breaking down body fat. It contains the compound D-limonene, which supports metabolism and cleansing of the lymphatic system.

Peppermint Oil

Peppermint essential oil is known for its ability to reduce appetite. Studies have shown that inhaling peppermint aroma every two hours decreases the feeling of hunger and consequently the intake of calories. It also improves mood, helps regulate digestion, and increases energy and alertness.

Cinnamon and Ginger

The scent of cinnamon and ginger is also effective in reducing sweet cravings. Cinnamon helps regulate blood sugar levels, thereby decreasing the desire for sugar. Ginger regulates blood sugar as well, and its taste reduces the urge for sweet foods.

How to Use Essential Oils to Reduce Sweet Cravings?

There are several ways you can include essential oils in your daily life to manage your craving for sweets:
  • Inhalation: Hold a bottle with the chosen essential oil under your nose and inhale deeply for 5 minutes.

  • Diffuser: Use an evaporator or diffuser to fill the room with the pleasant aroma of essential oil.

  • Warm Bath: Add 5 drops of essential oil to a warm bath and relax for 30 minutes.

  • Massage: Dilute the essential oil in a carrier oil (such as almond or coconut oil) and apply to areas of the body where fat accumulates.

Essential Oil Blend to Reduce Appetite

If you want to combine the effects of several essential oils, you can prepare the following blend:
  • 8 drops of bergamot essential oil
  • 4 drops of grapefruit essential oil
  • 2 drops of ginger essential oil

Pour this blend into a 10 ml bottle and shake well. As needed, smell the blend directly from the bottle. Alternatively, you can add 8 drops of bergamot oil, 4 drops of grapefruit oil, and 2 drops of ginger oil to a diffuser or, if you don’t have one, to a bowl with 500 ml of hot water. The steam will refresh the air in the room while also gently affecting your mood, tension, and appetite.

Additional Spices to Help Control Sweet Cravings

In addition to the mentioned essential oils, some spices can also help reduce the need for sugar:
  • Cardamom: This distinctive spice effectively suppresses the craving for sweets. You can add it to desserts, teas, or rice dishes.

  • Cloves: Proven to improve insulin function and lower blood glucose concentration, helping to control sweet cravings. You can add cloves to rice dishes or drinks such as tea.

Managing sweet cravings can be a challenge, but essential oils and certain spices can help you do this effectively. By including aromatherapy in your daily routine, you can naturally reduce your need for sugar.
