Industrially processed and refined food is very tasty and hard to resist. Of course, we're talking about sausages, chips, crackers and similar dishes; such food is immensely attractive to both children, men, and women. (Almost) no one can resist it.
The experiment was conducted at the American university Yale. They gathered 206 participants and first showed them photos of various foods. The participants had to rate the products in the pictures and estimate the number of calories.
Then all the participants were treated to these same products, and three hours later they were scanned with a tomograph (here, we know computerized tomography by the abbreviation CT).
Afterwards, everyone was given the same and limited amount of money, which they had to spend on a simulated food purchase for the next day. During the selection, the researchers measured brain activity in all participants. And here, a dramatic twist appeared.
The participants most often allocated their money to foods with unsaturated fats and lots of carbohydrates. In almost all cases, these were processed foods. The most shocking thing was that, in all participants, the reward center in the brain was activated. The more of these kinds of dishes they chose, the more often their brains rewarded them for the decision.
On the other hand: healthy, natural, and fresh food never gave the participants any reward, in any case.
Maybe because it wasn't in attractive packaging?!
