Proteins are complex organic molecules that are composed of at least 50 chain-linked amino acids. We distinguish between simple proteins and compound ones (proteides). They are of central importance for cellular metabolism, and our body is not able to synthesize all amino acids, which is why proteins are an essential part of our diet. The body needs them for building biomass, and they can also be a source of energy.
