Your thyroid quietly runs almost every system in your body — and it can be thrown off balance by everyday things like plastic containers, garden vegetables, and even certain supplements.
 

A small, butterfly-shaped gland at the base of your neck controls your energy, your weight, your mood, and even how well your brain works. Most people never think about it until something goes wrong. And when it does, the cause is rarely a single dramatic event — it's usually a slow accumulation of small, everyday exposures: a plastic water bottle left in a hot car, a cutting board full of raw broccoli, a "natural" supplement taken without a second thought.



Supermodel Gigi Hadid became a very public example of how disruptive thyroid problems can be. In December 2016 she revealed she had been diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease, an autoimmune condition that gradually reduces thyroid function. She later explained that unexplained fatigue, water retention, and rapid changes in her body were symptoms of the condition long before she had a name for it, and that medication together with lifestyle adjustments eventually helped her stabilize. Her story is a useful reminder that thyroid issues can develop quietly, long before they're diagnosed — and that everyday factors, from stress to diet to environmental exposure, can play a supporting role.



What exactly is an "endocrine disruptor"?



Substances that come from our environment and interfere with certain glands in the body are called endocrine disruptors — chemical or natural compounds that throw our hormones off balance. The term itself is relatively young: it was first coined in 1991 at the Wingspread Conference in Racine, Wisconsin, where a multidisciplinary group of scientists gathered to make sense of a pattern they were seeing across species.



The story, however, goes back further. As early as the 1960s, scientists observed reproductive problems in birds and crocodiles linked to synthetic chemicals in the environment. One of the most cited early cases is diethylstilbestrol (DES), a synthetic form of estrogen once prescribed to pregnant women in the United States to help prevent miscarriage. Years later, researchers found that daughters born to mothers who had taken DES were at higher risk of a rare cancer and reproductive abnormalities — a sobering early lesson in how exposure during pregnancy can echo into the next generation.



How can food affect the thyroid?



When we talk about thyroid disruptors, it isn't only about industrial chemicals — some completely natural components of food can also play a role. In everyday terms, there are foods that are simply "heavy" on the thyroid. The best known are goitrogenic compounds, found in certain fruits, vegetables, nuts, and legumes. Most of these foods are otherwise excellent for your health, but in some circumstances they can interfere with an enzyme called thyroid peroxidase, or TPO.



Think of TPO as a small processing plant for iodine. Iodine from your diet — from iodized salt or seafood, for example — needs to pass through this enzyme before your thyroid can use it to build hormones, mainly T3 and T4. When TPO's work is disrupted, hormone production can slow down, which may contribute to a sluggish metabolism.



Goitrogenic substances fall into three main groups: goitrins, thiocyanates, and flavonoids. Goitrins and thiocyanates form inside the plant itself when it's cut or chewed, while flavonoids — antioxidants that are otherwise very good for you — can be converted into goitrogenic compounds by bacteria in your gut.



The foods richest in goitrogens are cruciferous vegetables: broccoli, cabbage, kohlrabi, Brussels sprouts, radishes, cauliflower, and horseradish, along with soy and black and green tea. The reassuring news is that moderate consumption isn't something to worry about. A literature review of cruciferous vegetables and thyroid function found little reliable evidence that normal dietary amounts affect thyroid health in people who aren't already iodine-deficient — and in people with mild thyroid issues, the fiber and antioxidants in these vegetables may even be beneficial. Cooking also helps: heat breaks down much of the enzyme responsible for forming goitrogenic compounds in the first place.

Supplements: help, or a hidden trap?



Certain dietary supplements can also affect thyroid function, and it's worth knowing which ones to watch. This is general nutritional information, not a warning to avoid these ingredients — the key, as with most things, is dose and context, and it's always worth checking with a healthcare provider before starting a new supplement, especially if you already have a thyroid condition.




  • Bacopa monnieri — a plant used in Ayurvedic medicine, traditionally taken to support memory.

  • Fucus and Laminaria seaweed — naturally rich in iodine, but excessive intake can actually push the thyroid out of balance rather than support it.

  • Sea lettuce — a type of edible marine algae with a similarly high iodine content.

  • Magnolia bark and pepper (specifically the compound piperine) — frequently found in weight-loss products alongside caffeine, green tea extract, and cinnamon; in large combined doses, these can mildly slow thyroid activity.

  • Selenium — a mineral found in especially high amounts in Brazil nuts, and essential for thyroid hormone production.

  • Omega-3 fatty acids — found in fish oil, known for reducing inflammation and supporting overall hormonal balance.



Selenium in particular deserves attention: it's a well-established cofactor in thyroid hormone metabolism, and clinical research on selenium and thyroid disorders has linked low selenium status to a higher risk of autoimmune thyroid conditions such as Hashimoto's and Graves' disease. Chemicals from plastic: a quiet, stubborn enemy



In modern life, plastic is almost impossible to avoid entirely. The concern is that certain types of plastic release substances that mimic or interfere with our hormones. The two best known are bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates. BPA is commonly found in the lining of tin cans, in hard plastic bottles, and even on thermal-paper receipts. Phthalates, used to soften plastic, show up in PVC products, toys, vinyl, and some food packaging.



A 2016 study published in PLOS One measuring BPA, BPF, and related compounds in urine found a statistically significant association between urinary BPA and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels, adding to a growing body of research suggesting these chemicals may interact with thyroid function — though scientists agree more large-scale studies are needed before drawing firm conclusions about real-world health effects.



Given all this, it's a reasonable precaution to store food and drinks in glass or stainless steel rather than plastic where possible, and to avoid heating food in plastic containers, especially in the microwave.



Pesticides: a problem that's hard to ignore



Pesticides are another major category of endocrine disruptors. In an assessment reported by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), researchers evaluated 287 pesticides and found that roughly a third had the potential to interfere with thyroid function, according to a 2019 scientific review of pesticides with thyroid-disrupting potential that cited the EFSA figures.



Because thyroid hormones play such a central role in brain development, pregnant women and young children are considered the most sensitive groups. Research drawing on the Danish National Birth Cohort — one of the largest pregnancy studies in the world — has repeatedly linked even modest changes in maternal thyroid hormone levels during pregnancy to measurable differences in children's later cognitive test scores and IQ, underlining just how sensitive early brain development is to the hormonal environment in the womb. It's worth noting this research reflects associations found across large study populations, not individual predictions, and anyone with pregnancy-related health questions should speak with their doctor directly.



Choosing organic produce where it's practical, washing fruits and vegetables thoroughly, and varying where you buy your food can all help reduce cumulative pesticide exposure over time.



One last thing worth remembering



The thyroid is one of the few organs in the body where both too little and too much activity cause problems. If it underperforms, symptoms follow. If it overperforms, different symptoms follow. Moderation — in diet, in supplement use, in exposure to everyday chemicals — tends to be the theme that comes up again and again in thyroid health, and it's a good one to keep in mind.
