The dilemma of all diets: have you really lost weight or have you just lost excess water?

When you look at the scale, this is the crucial question, because if it’s just water loss, rapid weight loss has no real effect. Or does it?

If you lost 2, 3 or even more kilograms in just a few days, it's almost certainly just water loss from your body. That’s why the key question with any diet is: have you really lost weight, or are you just dehydrated and will quickly regain the missing kilos.

Have you lost water or fat?

Remember, one kilogram of weight is roughly equal to 7,500 calories. That’s a lot. Especially when you know that the optimal daily calorie intake is around 2,500 calories. That means that you would have to eat nothing for three days to lose a kilogram of weight.

Another piece of information measured by doctors shows that healthy weight loss is when you don’t lose more than 100 grams of weight per day. It’s also true that with healthy weight loss, you usually lose an additional 2 to 3 kilograms of water, which means that in a good week you can healthily lose 2 to 3 kilograms. However, this applies only during the first few days of dieting, when your body still contains a lot of excess water reserves.

Time is definitely the most important currency in weight loss. In no case should changes on the scale happen in less than 24 hours. If they do, you’re losing water, not fat, and the main culprits for this are sodium and carbohydrates. Sodium, which we mostly get bound to chlorine, is extremely bad for the body. So, don’t eat salty foods, and in general, stay more in the shade…

Don’t forget that digestion always takes at least one day to do everything it needs to do. Don’t believe in weight loss in just a few days.

And one more interesting thing: if you eat a lot of carbohydrates and salt, then by the end of the day, the scale may show less, but it’s only temporary. Losing weight with carbohydrates and salt isn’t a good idea.
