Regular consumption of fresh tomato juice has been shown to lower bad cholesterol and blood pressure in studies – but only if you prepare it the right way.
Tomato is not just an ordinary vegetable that we put on pizza or in salad. In fact, it's a real treasure trove of substances that protect our health. Just one large cup (about 350 ml) of freshly made juice from home-grown tomatoes contains:
- around 80 calories, which means you can enjoy it guilt-free, even if you're trying to lose weight,
- more than 400 mg potassium, which is almost 10% of the recommended daily intake,
- about 15 mg vitamin C, which is a third of your daily needs,
- plus calcium, magnesium, B, E, and A vitamins.
The Biggest Asset: Lycopene The thing that gives tomatoes their red color and is also their strongest secret is lycopene. It's a powerful antioxidant, which means it works in the body as a natural cleanser, helping to destroy harmful substances. A study published in the prestigious medical journal
Nutrition Journal showed that people who regularly drink tomato juice can reduce their levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) by up to 13% in a matter of weeks. At the same time, the level of good cholesterol (HDL), which ensures that fats do not clog blood vessels, increases.
Interestingly, lycopene in tomatoes is released even more effectively when tomatoes are heat-treated. But beware, this is especially true for lightly cooked tomatoes at home, not for industrially processed versions, where most of the vitamins are lost. So if you cook fresh tomato juice at home, you've hit the jackpot.
Protector of the Heart and Blood Vessels Cholesterol is often associated with the heart, and rightly so. When it starts to accumulate in the arteries, it can cause blockages, leading to heart attacks or strokes.
But tomato juice has several benefits: it cleans the blood vessels, helps lower blood pressure, and simultaneously stimulates the production of red blood cells, meaning the blood supplies organs with oxygen more quickly. In a study conducted by the
Tokyo Medical and Dental University, people who drank 200 ml of fresh tomato juice daily for three weeks saw a marked improvement in blood pressure and a reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases.
And one more thing: tomatoes contain vitamin K, which is extremely important for healthy blood clotting and preventing thrombosis. This is a condition in which dangerous clots start to form in the blood vessels.
Support for the Liver, Pancreas, and Gallbladder In addition to supporting the heart, tomatoes work very well with our internal filters, such as the liver, pancreas, and gallbladder. These three organs are responsible for breaking down, processing, and storing the food we eat, as well as eliminating what we don't need. And if they are overloaded, for example due to sugar, alcohol, or processed foods, this leads to fatigue, bloating, and feeling unwell.
In folk medicine, tomato juice has often been considered a morning remedy – especially after holidays or a heavy night out. It used to be believed that if you drink a glass of fresh tomato juice on an empty stomach in the morning, you will cleanse your body most effectively.
And interestingly, science backs this up. A study in the
American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that people who regularly consume lycopene reduce their chances of fatty liver and improve pancreas function, which is especially important for people with early signs of insulin resistance. This means the body has trouble processing sugars.
Tomatoes and Weight Loss? An Excellent Pair! If you want to lose some weight, tomato juice is your ally. In addition to having very few calories (as mentioned – less than 80 kcal per 350 ml), it also contains fiber that provides a sense of satiety. After drinking such juice, you'll have less desire for sweets and snacks.
In a Japanese study from 2021, in which participants drank 280 ml of tomato juice per day, after just 8 weeks participants had lower blood fat levels and lost an average of 1.5 kilograms, without making any changes to diet or exercise.
Something for Party Lovers... Have you ever experienced that well-known hangover feeling the morning after a party? Headache, nausea, dry mouth, irritability ... Grandmothers had the solution: a glass of tomato juice right after waking up. Tomatoes contain glutamic acid (a natural amino acid) that speeds up alcohol metabolism and restores lost electrolytes. Besides, the potassium, sodium, and magnesium content helps restore balance in the body.
In one of the smaller studies at the
University of Taipei, they showed that after drinking fresh tomato juice, alcohol is eliminated from the body nearly 50% faster than if you only drink water.
How to Prepare the Healthiest Tomato Juice? If you want the best effects, prepare the juice at home. Use ripe home-grown tomatoes, briefly boil them, mash them, add a pinch of salt (if any), a little lemon juice or chili for taste, then drink it warm or cooled.
For additional healing power, you can also add:
- cinnamon, which helps regulate blood sugar,
- turmeric, which has anti-inflammatory effects,
- or ginger, which stimulates digestion and warms the body.
Tomato juice is one of those natural solutions that almost all of us have at hand, yet we don't appreciate enough. It's not a medicine in the classic sense, but it's an extremely strong natural supplement that can improve well-being, health, and even your figure.
If you regularly include it in your diet, say a glass every other day, you will quickly notice differences: more energy, easier digestion, less bloating, better sleep, and even better concentration. And best of all: all this without side effects.
If you are looking for something natural, effective, and affordable, tomato juice is the right choice.
