5 issues that bananas solve better than medicine
When we delve into the nutritional composition of bananas, it quickly becomes clear that there is much more hidden inside than we might think. Take advantage of this!
The banana, which we sometimes mistake for just a simple snack, hides a true treasure trove of health. It is full of naturally occurring sugars – glucose, fructose, and sucrose – which, together with soluble fibers, provide the body with quick yet stable energy. Because of these properties, athletes often consume it right before or after training. But what’s even more important – numerous studies confirm that bananas have a therapeutic effect on five common issues that many people otherwise try to solve with medication.
- Bloating and constipation
If you ever feel like your stomach has stopped and you don’t feel light, then you’re probably suffering from constipation or bloating. This is not at all unusual – according to estimates by the World Health Organization (WHO), around 30% of adults in the developed world regularly have digestive issues.
Bananas contain pectin, a type of fiber that acts as a natural digestion accelerator. Pectin also helps remove toxins and even heavy metals from the body. This is especially important today, when we are exposed daily to various pollutants – in the air, food, and water.
Interestingly, bananas have long been used in folk medicine as a mild natural laxative. And with good reason – their fiber composition stimulates intestinal peristalsis, meaning the natural movement of the intestines, making it easier for the body to cleanse itself. As the old folk saying goes: “Where the intestines fail, health squats.”
In addition, bananas act as a prebiotic – meaning they feed the good bacteria in our gut. These bacteria, called probiotics, play a key role in the immune system, mood, and metabolism. With just one banana a day, you support three important bodily functions at once.
- Stress and loss of energy
Have you ever noticed how, during intense stress, your body gets confused, your stomach tightens, and you might even get diarrhea? Stress is actually a physical reaction that greatly affects the functions of internal organs, especially the balance of minerals. Potassium drops first, which leads to disturbances in the function of the heart, muscles, and even the brain.
Bananas are naturally rich in potassium – an average banana contains about 422 mg of potassium, which is almost 10% of an adult's daily requirement. Potassium is crucial for regulating heart rhythm and also enables oxygen supply to the brain. When you have enough, you can focus more easily, sleep better, and the body processes stress stimuli more easily.
Interestingly, the banana is one of the few fruits that regulates water balance in the body – meaning it also helps when stress leads to water retention and a feeling of bloating. So, a natural remedy for two problems in one fruit.
- Blood pressure and heart diseases
According to the National Institute of Public Health, in Slovenia, every fourth adult deals with high blood pressure, and after the age of 60, every second person. And this is where the banana proves itself to be a simple ally.
The reason lies again in potassium – scientists from Harvard University have found that daily potassium intake between 3,500 and 4,700 mg can lower the risk of stroke by up to 27%. One banana a day is thus not only a sweet treat, but a small, yet important, step towards a healthier heart.
Bananas are also a naturally low-sodium food, meaning they contain very little salt – another plus for those wanting to lower blood pressure. In addition, they do not contain saturated fats or cholesterol, which burden the blood vessels.
- Depression and mood swings
When we talk about mood, we must mention a substance called tryptophan. It is an amino acid that, in the body, turns into serotonin, often called the “happiness hormone.” Without it, a person feels apathetic, tired, and irritable.
Bananas contain a fair amount of tryptophan, which is why many people refer to them as a natural antidepressant. According to the U.S. National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), one in six people in the USA suffers from depression, and here at home, data shows that at least 15% of the population has symptoms corresponding to mild to moderate depression.
It’s no wonder then that bananas have been present for centuries as a fruit of peace in Ayurvedic and Chinese traditional medicine. They increase serotonin levels, and also contain vitamin B6, which supports the metabolism of neurotransmitters. The result? More inner peace and fewer negative thoughts.
- PMS and hormonal fluctuations
Every woman knows how unpleasant premenstrual tension can be. According to the European Society of Gynecology, as many as 75% of women experience pain, irritability, or mood swings before menstruation.
Bananas, in this case, are a little miracle of nature. They contain vitamin B6, which is extremely important for regulating blood sugar – and this significantly helps relieve irritability and fatigue. Additionally, this vitamin also has anti-inflammatory effects and helps reduce water retention, which means less swelling and less painful breasts.
Interestingly, many women who ate a banana every day for a week before their period reported a reduction of symptoms by more than 40%, as confirmed by studies published in the Journal of Reproductive Medicine.
In folk medicine, we say that nature always finds a way. And banana is one of those gifts of nature that we might unfairly overlook. Not only is it cheap, accessible, and tasty – it also has the power to improve our wellbeing and health in an entirely natural way.
Instead of reaching for pills at the first sign of discomfort, we can simply pause for a moment and eat a banana. It may seem too little, but science and practice confirm: the greatest power often lies in simplicity.
If you’ve already felt stress, bloating, or been caught by a bad mood today – maybe it’s time for one single, yellow fruit. It might not work a miracle right away, but it will surely make a difference. Your body will be grateful.
