Does French fries really increase the risk of anxiety and depression?
Frequent consumption of fried foods, especially French fries, increases the risk of mental disorders such as anxiety and depression. Be careful!

A recent study published in the prestigious journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences highlighted a possible link between frequent consumption of fried foods, especially French fries, and an increased risk of mental disorders such as anxiety and depression.

The study and its findings

In the study, researchers monitored more than 140,000 individuals from the UK Biobank over a period of 11 years. They found that individuals who regularly consumed fried foods had a 12% higher risk of developing anxiety and a 7% higher risk of developing depression compared to those who did not eat these foods frequently.

Possible mechanisms of influence

One of the key factors that could explain this link is the presence of acrylamide in fried foods. Acrylamide is a chemical compound that forms during the thermal processing of food at high temperatures, especially in foods rich in carbohydrates, such as potato products. This compound has been linked to inflammatory processes in the body, which can affect brain function and thus mental health.

The importance of a holistic approach

Although the study results are concerning, experts emphasize that mental health is a complex phenomenon influenced by multiple factors. Dr. Nicole Lippman-Barile, clinical psychologist and expert in nutritional psychology, points out that there is not a single food directly responsible for the development of mental disorders. She stresses the importance of a balanced diet and a holistic approach to mental health.

Practical tips for everyday life

To maintain good mental health, it is recommended to:
  • Reduce consumption of fried foods: Limit your intake of French fries and other fried dishes and replace them with healthier alternatives, such as baked or boiled potatoes.

  • Balanced diet: Include more fresh fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats in your diet that support brain function.

  • Regular physical activity: Physical activity promotes the release of endorphins, which improve mood.

  • Social activities: Connecting with others and maintaining social contacts positively affects mental well-being.

  • Awareness and stress management: Techniques such as meditation, breathing exercises, or yoga can help manage everyday stress.

Even though occasional consumption of French fries likely will not have fatal consequences for your mental health, it is important to be aware of the potential risks associated with frequent consumption of fried foods. By maintaining a balanced diet, regular physical activity, and taking care of your mental well-being, you can contribute to better overall health and quality of life.
