Date: 07/31/2026 - GOOD TO KNOW
Your body already knows it lacks magnesium, but you don’t
Muscle cramps, ringing in the ears, strong heartbeat – the body sends clear warnings. Read about which signs to recognize and where to find this key mineral.
Ringing in the ears
A ringing in your ears, occasional hearing loss, or maybe you sometimes hear your own heartbeat? All these are signs that can appear when you are lacking magnesium. At first, it occurs occasionally and only for a short time, but if the deficiency persists, in extreme cases you could even lose your hearing.
Cramps in the legs and swollen ankles
Swollen legs are symptoms that show up with many illnesses, but if they are also accompanied by muscle cramps, it is almost certainly because of magnesium. Magnesium cramps can also occur during sleep.
Strong heartbeat
A strong heartbeat, pressure in the chest, and an uncomfortable feeling are also signs of magnesium deficiency. Heart arrhythmia can even lead to a stroke or heart attack.
Kidney and gallstones
Many people think that stones form only because of too much calcium, but one of the causes is also a lack of magnesium. Magnesium actually prevents stones from forming, and can even dissolve them.
Where to find magnesium?
The most magnesium is found in green leafy vegetables. In second place are almonds, cashews, peanuts, walnuts… Among fish, trout have the most magnesium, and among legumes it's lentils, beans, chickpeas, peas, and broad beans. Recommended fruits include avocado, bananas, figs, prunes, and raisins. And finally, don’t forget about dairy products and, of course, dark chocolate.
And finally, a tip: too much magnesium can also be harmful, so no excess is good. On top of that, the optimal amount depends on various factors (age, gender, height, weight, alcohol consumption, etc.). For example, children only need 170 milligrams, while men need 350 milligrams.
