Indian Psyllium: The Secret Weapon for a Healthy Gut, Fighting Candida, and Weight Loss
Psyllium absorbs up to 10 times its weight in water and cleanses the intestines – but does it really help with candida too? What science says will surprise you.
We’ve already used psyllium, or Indian plantain, a few times in recipes on Vem, kaj jem. You’ll find it in the recipe for flourless bread made LCHF-style (
Protein bread from seeds), as well as in healthy zucchini patties... Because it contains a very high amount of both soluble and insoluble natural fiber, it is highly recommended for everyday consumption. And since it contains no gluten or carbohydrates, it's often used in LCHF recipes (low-carb, high-fat – you can read more about this in the article LCHF for Beginners).
The health benefits of psyllium are proven:
- Regular and healthy digestion (better intestinal motility),
- Lowering cholesterol,
- Reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases,
- Better detoxification of the body.
It’s one of the purest natural forms of fiber known. Psyllium is also called Indian plantain because it was used as a medicine in India thousands of years ago. It has a mild laxative effect and the remarkable property of binding toxins and cleansing the body. That’s why even today, folk healers use it to treat diarrhea, dysentery, all kinds of intestinal infections...
At the moment, psyllium is highly sought after because of its role in overcoming problems with candida (that annoying microorganism that causes all sorts of issues – attacks nerves, muscle tissue, causes bloating, constipation, joint pain, and in extreme cases, even cancer). So far, there is no evidence that candida can be eradicated by psyllium alone. However, because psyllium, in addition to its cleansing function, also ensures greater intestinal motility – which means a healthier and more active digestive system (the most important aspect in fighting candida) – Indian plantain is practically indispensable. If you have done everything to get rid of candida (stopped eating sugar) but haven’t ensured active cleansing of the intestines, you won’t get rid of candida.

The most important characteristic of psyllium is that it can absorb up to 10 times its own weight in water, forming a jelly-like mucus with strong cleansing and soothing effects (it’s recommended to soak psyllium in water overnight). Due to its high moisture absorption, psyllium should always be consumed with water. We recommend mixing 1 to 2 teaspoons of psyllium with 3 dcl of water, in the morning on an empty stomach or as a replacement for dinner. Let it stand for at least 5 minutes, then drink. Instead of water, you can use kefir or yogurt, but we do not recommend other additives.
Since psyllium absorbs a lot of moisture, never eat it on its own. Be especially careful with children, as it can cause choking, and adults should not overdo it either, since even one teaspoon has a significant cleansing effect.
Otherwise, psyllium is also used as a stabilizer in ice cream or chocolate, is often found in cosmetics, and as mentioned, in many cleansing and paleo / LCHF diets. If you decide to buy psyllium, watch out for two things: it’s very important to buy from a reputable manufacturer with controlled origin, and some time ago, pharmacies started selling a mixture of psyllium and sugar – which was often even prescribed by doctors (the best-known useless mixture was Metamucil capsules). Healthy fiber mixed with sugar is complete nutritional nonsense! At Vem, kaj jem, we definitely recommend consuming psyllium in its natural form.
One more thing to remember: if you are not a supporter of artificial fiber supplements, then psyllium is a real jackpot for you. In just two teaspoons you’ll get 36% of your daily fiber needs, completely natural and with loads of positive effects.
