Bananas and Potassium: A Myth That Needs to Be Broken Down
A banana contains 422 mg of potassium, but potato, spinach, and yogurt far surpass it—get to know foods with more potassium, which you are likely eating every day.
An average-sized banana has 422 milligrams of potassium, which is about 9% of the required daily amount. That’s quite a lot, but not the most. There are quite a few foods you eat every day that, from this perspective, are even healthier.
And why is it good to eat foods high in potassium?
Potassium mostly neutralizes nitrates and thus regulates blood pressure, cholesterol levels in the blood, has a positive effect on the functioning of the heart, intestines, and overall digestion. An adult should consume 4,700 milligrams of potassium per day. If the body doesn’t get the required amount, it responds with dizziness, headaches, sudden sweating...
Where, besides bananas, can we find a lot of potassium?
1. Medium-baked potato has about 751 milligrams of potassium, while regular boiled sweet potato has 542 milligrams. However, it’s true that it’s much easier to eat 11 bananas than three-quarters of a kilogram of potatoes.
2. Swiss chard is not just a pleasant side dish to fish, but try to remember it more often, because we often forget its nutritional value. 100 grams of chard have 961 milligrams of potassium, which is twice as much as bananas.
3. Spinach is similarly rich in a whole range of nutrients, including potassium, of which there are 839 milligrams in 100 grams (this applies to both cooked and raw spinach).
4. Peas have 1,189 milligrams of potassium. If you like peas as a side dish with rice, or in meat sauce, so much the better.
5. A slice of avocado in a sandwich has 1,000 milligrams of potassium, which is more than two, maybe even three bananas. Avocado is also a very pleasant addition to salads.
6. Fish, shellfish and salmon have so much potassium that with just 250 grams of these foods, you reach the recommended daily amount.
7. Low-fat yogurt doesn’t make you gain weight (of course, if it’s not sweetened or enriched with chemically enhanced flavors), it’s good for digestion, overall well-being, health, and contains 531 milligrams of potassium. Drinking half a liter of yogurt isn’t a problem either, right?!
