When Vegetables Become a Meal: What Is Salad Missing To Really Fill You Up
Cheese, eggs, nuts, seeds, and homemade yogurt dressing – these are the ingredients that usually turn an ordinary bowl of vegetables into a real, nutritious meal.
The best, healthiest, and most energy-packed salads are made by Italians. With them, it seems as if the sense for preparing a rich salad is innate. This is even more remarkable because salad is eaten all over the world. The fact is, just some vegetables, oil, vinegar, and seasoning don't make a salad a meal.
Which Ingredients Make Salad a Meal?
The story begins with vegetables, which must be as fresh as possible. With wilted lettuce and rotten tomatoes, you’ll hardly be able to make a tasty meal.
Salad should always – truly always – be enriched with pieces of cheese, perhaps some egg, canned fish works well too, tuna, various nuts, seeds, grains, or even pieces of diced dried bread can give salad a richer flavor.
You can prepare salad in advance. That’s not a problem. Just remember to season it right before you eat it, especially when it comes to oil and other spices (salt, pepper, etc.).
Your salad will become a very filling meal if you combine leafy vegetables that grow above ground with vegetables that grow below ground (carrots, potatoes, even onion, etc.).
Experiment with fruit. A few slices of orange completely change the taste of a salad. Don’t forget about raisins either.
And then there’s the dressing... If possible, avoid store-bought dressings! Instead, make your own, for example from yogurt and avocado, or yogurt and mayonnaise. The best dressing, though, is made from yogurt, oil, and a bit of onion.
