5 problems you can treat with water
Our ancestors used water to relieve pain, eliminate insomnia, and even to treat chronic diseases. Today, science confirms what our parents already knew...

Water has an exceptional healing power. Here are a few examples:
  • Muscle pain: natural regeneration
After strenuous physical activity, we often face muscle soreness. One of the effective methods for relieving these pains is alternating showers with hot and cold water, known as contrast water therapy. A 2007 study showed that this method accelerates muscle recovery after exercise.

It is recommended to shower the painful areas with hot water (37.5–41 degrees Celsius) for three minutes, then for 30 seconds with cold water (10–15 degrees Celsius). Repeat the procedure three times, finishing with cold water. This temperature alternation stimulates blood circulation and reduces inflammation.

  • Headache: cold relief
Headache is often the result of poor blood circulation in the brain. Cold water can help improve circulation and reduce pain. Some people report headache relief when they immerse their hands or feet in cold water for a few minutes. This method can help draw blood away from the head to the limbs, thereby reducing pressure in the head.

In addition, cold compresses on the forehead and back of the neck can aid in pain relief. For shoulder pain, warm compresses may be helpful.

  • Blocked sinuses: heat and cold for easier breathing
Blocked sinuses can be very unpleasant. One method to relieve this condition is a combination of a warm foot bath and cold compresses on the forehead and neck. Immerse your feet in warm water (about 40 degrees Celsius) for 10–30 minutes, while placing cold compresses on your forehead and the back of your neck. The heat will stimulate blood circulation in the legs, while the cold compresses will reduce inflammation in the sinuses.

  • Arthritis: water therapy for flexible joints
Arthritis is a chronic disease that causes pain and stiffness in the joints. Water therapies, such as hydrotherapy, have proven effective in relieving arthritis symptoms. Studies have shown that hydrotherapy reduces pain and improves joint flexibility in patients with knee osteoarthritis.

If you don't have access to hydrotherapy, you can use cold compresses at home to relieve joint pain. It is important not to use compresses for too long and to take breaks during use to prevent skin damage.

  • Insomnia: warm bath for a peaceful sleep
Insomnia is a common issue, especially among older adults. A warm bath before bed can help with relaxation and improve sleep quality. A 2002 study showed that evening warm baths improve sleep in older people with insomnia.

It is recommended to bathe in water with a temperature between 36–38 degrees Celsius about 30 minutes before bedtime. If you place a cold compress on your forehead during the bath, you can further encourage relaxation.

Water is therefore more than just a basic necessity of life – it is a natural remedy that we always have at hand. By using simple water therapies, we can alleviate various health problems and improve quality of life. It is important to listen to our bodies and look for ways to help them naturally.
