Are three meals a day truly the biggest myth of modern times?
People started practicing three meals a day in the Middle Ages. But is that really good for us?
Back then, it was believed that eating outside of scheduled hours was uncivilized and animalistic behavior. All proper gentlemen strictly followed a meal schedule, which led to the establishment of the three-meal rule.

When European settlers colonized America, they naturally brought their habits from Europe. In the U.S., three meals a day became a sign of sophistication and refinement, but no one asked if this was healthy or how it affected health.

In 2010, a large study on eating habits and their connection to diseases was launched, and the results surprised many.

Doctors and nutritionists agree that the number of meals doesn't matter—what counts is the amount and number of calories consumed. Some people ate up to six meals a day (and were among the healthiest), while others stuck to an optimal two meals (performing only slightly worse).

The study also showed that occasional fasting is beneficial, as it has a cleansing effect on the body, regulates digestion, boosts the immune system... proving that the number of meals isn't what’s important.

Today, nutritionists recommend eating when you're hungry. (If you're unsure, drink a glass of water first, wait 20 minutes, and if the hunger doesn’t go away, you’re not really hungry.) Everyone knows best how many meals they need.

The only thing you need to watch is your calorie intake. Many who follow this advice strictly prefer foods that are low in calories but high in fiber, as they keep you feeling full longer.
