5 of the Healthiest Seeds to Add to Your Diet
If there were a magical box full of the power of nature, seeds would definitely be part of it. So small, yet so powerful.
Here are 5 seeds that have earned the title of superfoods. And not because of advertisements, but due to solid scientific evidence and millennia of use all over the world.
  1. Flaxseeds – Tiny Health Treasure from Antiquity
Flaxseeds are among the oldest cultivated plants in the world. The Egyptians knew them over 5,000 years ago, and today we know that they are not only good for digestion but also for the heart and brain.

    What do they contain?
    • Alpha-Linolenic Acid (ALA), which is a plant form of omega-3 fatty acids. According to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, ALA can reduce the risk of heart disease by up to 14%.

    • Lignans – plant compounds with antioxidant properties that regulate hormones, especially in menopausal women.

    • 27 grams of fiber per 100 grams. That's almost 3 times more than in oatmeal!

    Why should you use them?

Regular consumption of flaxseeds (2 teaspoons a day) can lower cholesterol, improve digestion, reduce inflammation in the body, and even help regulate blood sugar. It is important to grind them before use - otherwise, the body cannot utilize most of the nutrients.

  2. Chia Seeds – Ancient Mayan Power on Your Plate
The word chia means "strength" in the language of the ancient Mayan people. And indeed, just one tablespoon of these tiny seeds contains almost everything you need for an energetic start to your day.

    What do they contain?
    • 34% fiber – great for digestion as they help cleanse the intestines and prevent constipation.

    • Approximately 17% omega-3 fatty acids (ALA).

    • 16 grams of protein per 100 grams – more than in many grains.

    • High amounts of calcium (30 g of chia seeds contain more calcium than 100 ml of milk!), magnesium, iron, and phosphorus.

What do they do in the body?

When mixed with water or yogurt, they form a gel that helps regulate appetite, stabilize blood sugar levels, and keep you feeling full longer. It is this gel-like texture that is the secret – as if it creates a natural barrier in your stomach. According to a study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, chia seeds help lower blood pressure and reduce inflammatory processes.

  3. Pumpkin Seeds – Folk Remedy for Strength and Fertility
The ancient Slovenes believed that "whoever has pumpkin seeds has strength for two people." And perhaps they were not far from the truth.

    What do they contain?
    • Abundant magnesium – 168 mg in just 30 g of seeds (which is 40% of an adult's daily requirement).

    • Zinc, which aids the immune system, skin health, and even sperm quality.

    • Phytosterols – natural compounds that help lower bad cholesterol (LDL). According to the Cleveland Clinic, they can reduce cholesterol levels by up to 10%.

    • Protein: 19 g per 100 g.

Why did our grandparents love them too?

Because they strengthen the bladder and prostate. Many natural healers recommend daily snacking on a handful of pumpkin seeds for men over 40. Additionally, they are extremely beneficial for the nerves as they contain a lot of tryptophan, an amino acid that aids in the production of the happiness hormone serotonin.

  4. Sunflower Seeds – Sunshine in a Spoon
When we talk about a seed that lifts the mood, we cannot overlook sunflower seeds. Just looking at a sunflower in the middle of summer fills us with optimism – and its seeds do the same!

    What do they contain?
    • Vitamin E – a potent antioxidant. In one handful of sunflower seeds (30 g), there is over 35% of the daily recommended amount of vitamin E!

    • Selenium, zinc, and copper – all these minerals play a crucial role in defending the body against infections.

    • B complex vitamins, especially B6, which helps regulate mood and supports the nervous system.

Why should you include them in your diet?

Regular consumption of sunflower seeds reduces the risk of heart disease, improves skin elasticity, and strengthens hair. According to the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, they even have the ability to reduce inflammation in the body. Just be careful not to eat too many at once, as they are quite calorie-dense - around 580 per 100 g. But if consumed in moderation (1–2 tablespoons a day), they will act as a natural shield against stress.

  5. Hemp Seeds – Nature's Protein Bomb
When we mention hemp, don't let the name deceive you. We are talking about industrial hemp - the kind that has no psychoactive effects and is completely legal to cultivate in Slovenia.

    What do they contain?
    • All essential amino acids – meaning the body can build all the proteins it needs from them.

    • Ideal ratio of omega-3 and omega-6 fats (1:3), which regulates inflammation and ensures brain health.

    • 25 g of protein per 100 g – almost as much as chicken meat!

    Why are they outstanding?

Because they act as a natural energy drink, without sugar and harmful additives. They help with recovery from illness, boost the immune system, and promote muscle growth – that's why athletes also enjoy them. According to the Harvard School of Public Health, regular consumption of hemp seeds can lower blood triglyceride levels and improve good cholesterol (HDL) levels.

How to incorporate seeds into your diet?

You can sprinkle seeds on yogurt, cereals, mix them into smoothies, add them to bread or pancakes. It is important to consume them raw (unless slightly roasted without oil) and preferably unprocessed.

For the best effect:
  • Grind flaxseeds (otherwise, they will pass through the body without utilizing the nutrients).

  • Soak chia seeds (at least 10 minutes).

  • Eat pumpkin and sunflower seeds as snacks or in salads.

  • Include hemp seeds in soups, sauces, or sprinkle them over pasta.

The secret to a long and healthy life often lies in small things – and seeds are literally among the smallest but most effective gifts of nature. By incorporating them into your daily diet, you will give your body strength, energy, and protection as our ancestors knew.

They may not solve all your problems, but in combination with a healthy diet, exercise, and positive thoughts, they will become your loyal ally.

And remember - sometimes we do the most good when we include something small yet powerful in our lives. Seeds are definitely that.
