7 things you should never do after a meal
After a meal, we often indulge in something we find relaxing or beneficial: a cigarette, fruit, tea, a walk, or even a short break... Be careful with this!
Many habits we have after eating can negatively affect our health and digestion. Why it is important to pay attention to our post-meal habits and how some of them can harm our bodies.?!

Smoking after a meal

Many smokers enjoy a cigarette after a meal, as they believe it aids in digestion or relaxation. However, research shows that smoking after eating can increase the risk of serious health issues. Nicotine can affect the functioning of the digestive system and reduce nutrient absorption. Additionally, smoking after a meal increases the risk of heart and vascular diseases and other chronic conditions.

Eating fruit immediately after a meal

Fruit is healthy and full of vitamins, but it is not recommended to consume it immediately after a meal. Fruit is digested quickly, while heavier foods such as meat and starchy foods digest more slowly. Consuming fruit right after a meal can cause bloating and discomfort in the stomach. It is advisable to eat fruit at least an hour before a meal or two hours after.

Drinking tea after a meal

Although tea is often associated with health benefits, drinking tea immediately after a meal can affect nutrient absorption. Tea contains tannins that can bind to iron and other minerals, reducing their absorption in the body. This is particularly important for people with low iron levels or anemia. It is recommended to drink tea between meals or at least an hour after eating.

Loosening the belt after a meal

After a heavy meal, we often feel bloated and wish to loosen our belts. However, this can put additional strain on the digestive system and even lead to discomfort or abdominal pain. Instead, it is better to wear comfortable clothing that does not press on the stomach, especially during and after a meal.

Bathing after a meal

A warm bath after a meal may seem relaxing, but it can affect digestion. When we eat, the body directs more blood to the digestive system to aid in digestion. A warm bath can divert blood away from the digestive tract, which can slow down digestion and cause discomfort. It is advisable to wait at least 30 minutes after a meal before taking a bath.

Walking after a meal

A leisurely walk after a meal can be beneficial for digestion and regulating blood sugar. Studies show that a short walk after eating can help lower blood sugar levels, which is especially useful for people with diabetes. However, intense physical activity immediately after a meal is not recommended, as it can cause discomfort or digestive issues. It is best to go for a short, relaxed walk after a meal.

Lying down after a meal

Lying down immediately after a meal can cause acid reflux and heartburn. When lying down, stomach acid can more easily move back into the esophagus, causing discomfort. This is particularly problematic for people with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It is recommended to remain upright for at least two hours after a meal before lying down.

Good to know...

Our habits after a meal can greatly impact our health and well-being. By following the above advice, we can improve digestion, reduce the risk of discomfort, and contribute to overall well-being. It is important to listen to our bodies and adjust our habits to support our health.
