5 reasons why eating onions is good
Onions are an essential ingredient in every kitchen and not only great for enhancing the flavor of dishes but also have numerous health benefits. Don't believe it?!
Whether it's white, red, or black onion, this versatile vegetable contains a wealth of beneficial substances that our body needs. Among them are vitamins (especially vitamin C, which boosts the immune system, and vitamins B6 and B9, which aid in metabolism), minerals such as potassium (helps regulate blood pressure) and manganese (important for healthy bones), and plenty of antioxidants, substances that protect our cells from damage.

Particularly notable is the antioxidant quercetin, which has anti-inflammatory effects and helps reduce the risk of various chronic diseases. Although onions may not be the richest source of vitamins, their other properties outweigh this deficiency. Scientists have found that regular consumption of onions can contribute to better health and even reduce the risk of certain diseases.

  1. Onions can reduce the risk of cancer
One study conducted in Italy and Switzerland examined the link between eating onions and garlic and the risk of developing cancer. The study showed that people who frequently consume these vegetables have up to 25% lower risk of developing certain types of cancer, such as stomach and colon cancer. This was attributed mainly to the antioxidants and sulfur compounds in onions, which have anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects.

  2. Strengthens bone health
Women over 50 are often at risk of osteoporosis - a condition where bones become weak and brittle. A study found that women who regularly eat onions have a 20% lower risk of hip fracture and higher bone mineral density. This means that onions help maintain strong and healthy bones, which is especially important in later years.

  3. Speeds up digestion and supports gut health
Onions contain inulin - a type of dietary fiber that acts as a prebiotic. Prebiotics are substances that promote the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut, which is crucial for good digestion and a strong immune system. Regular consumption of onions can improve digestion, reduce bloating, and prevent constipation.

  4. Helps lower cholesterol
High cholesterol is a major risk factor for heart and vascular diseases. Studies have shown that regularly consuming onions (or onion juice) for at least 8 weeks can lead to a decrease in total and LDL cholesterol (the so-called bad cholesterol). This means that onions can help maintain a healthy heart and reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.

  5. Improves the absorption of lycopene
Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant found in tomatoes and is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular diseases and some types of cancer. Interestingly, onions improve the absorption of lycopene from tomatoes, which means that the combination of these two foods can further enhance their positive effects on health.

Onions are truly versatile and extremely healthy vegetables. Their health benefits are supported by numerous scientific studies confirming their positive impact on reducing the risk of chronic diseases, strengthening bones, improving digestion, and lowering cholesterol.

So don't hesitate ... Include onions in your diet and take advantage of all their healing effects.
