Sugar causes much greater addiction than alcohol, drugs, and tobacco, yet we do nothing about it, even though it is clear that it is destroying our lives.
An adult could only consume 25 grams or 6 teaspoons of sugar per day. If you could measure how much you actually consume, you would be shocked. So, it is no surprise that obesity and diabetes are the biggest scourges of modern society.
Of course, as with any addiction, gradual change is very important. If you have a sweet tooth, we do not recommend that you stop eating sweets tomorrow. Give your body time, and start by choosing things with less sugar, but definitely avoid artificial sweeteners.
After reducing sweetness for about two weeks, you can try eating foods with no added sugars at all. You won't be able to avoid sugars in fruits, vegetables, and milk, but these sugars are much less harmful...
And how do you know when you are no longer addicted to sugar?
It's not easy. Studies have shown that it takes about 100 days before you can say you are not addicted to sugar.
1. You will feel better ![](https://foodwhisper.com/podatki/2025\02\10\slike\url_114215_600x450.jpg)
Increased sugar levels in the body are strongly associated with depression, irritability, and anxiety. It is true that sugar quickly fills you with energy, but it is more like aggression than optimistic cheerfulness. More sugar is therefore not a good thing. If you feel bad during the withdrawal period, eat a carrot or an apple instead. Fruits and vegetables will cheer you up in a healthy way.
2. Improved sleep quality ![](https://foodwhisper.com/podatki/2025\02\10\slike\url_114205_600x450.jpg)
When you eat something sweet, your blood sugar suddenly rises and then drops rapidly. All of this causes stress in the body, increases the secretion of the hormone cortisol, which interferes with sleep, so your body cannot rest due to sugar. Pay attention: nightmares will haunt you only when you snack on sweets late at night.
3. Excess weight ![](https://foodwhisper.com/podatki/2025\02\10\slike\url_114155_600x450.jpg)
It is a well-known fact that eating fewer sweets will help you lose weight faster, which is not entirely true. You gain weight when you eat sugar in combination with bad fats. Especially avoid high-calorie desserts that give you bad and short-lived energy but actually only clutter your body. Studies have shown that you can use a simple formula for weight loss: for every amount of sugar you reduce, you will lose three times as much weight. Example: if you eat 100 grams less sugar per day, you will naturally lose a kilogram in just over three days.
4. Acne ![](https://foodwhisper.com/podatki/2025\02\10\slike\url_114147_600x450.jpg)
Sugar causes internal inflammation and stubborn skin problems that manifest as acne. Years ago, a study conducted in the USA showed that after three days of regular consumption of sugary drinks, 87% of respondents developed acne. The same applies to chocolates, candies, cakes, and other sweets.
5. Better memory ![](https://foodwhisper.com/podatki/2025\02\10\slike\url_114102_600x450.jpg)
At the University of South Carolina in the USA, an extensive study was conducted to explore the impact of sugar on learning and memory performance. The key finding was that sugar inhibits communication between brain cells.
