Pineapple or melon: what is healthier?
When we think about healthy snacks, we often find ourselves faced with a dilemma that is not easily resolved. There is a lot more behind it...
Pineapple and melon are refreshing, delicious, and full of vitamins. But which one is healthier? Let's delve into the numbers, nutritional values, and health benefits...

Melon, the queen of summer

Melon is known for its juicy and sweet center, which is perfect as a snack or dessert. There are several types of melons, among which pineapple melon and Cantaloupe melon are among the most popular. But remember, this applies to summer melons. Those available in spring, even if harvested where it is summer, are not comparable to summer ones.

Generally, tropical fruits in spring are 20 to 30% less nutritious than fruits in mid-summer.

Pineapple melon contains approximately 36 calories per 100 g, making it a low-calorie snack. In the same quantity, it contains 0.8 g of dietary fiber, which aids in digestion and blood sugar regulation. Although it is somewhat modest in vitamin A (50 IU, which is only 1% of the daily requirement), it offers 18 mg of vitamin C, which boosts the immune system, and 228 mg of potassium, which promotes a healthy heart function and regulates blood pressure.

Cantaloupe melon is slightly different. It contains 34 calories per 100 g and stands out for its high content of vitamin A, with 3382 IU per 100 g, which is 68% of the daily requirement for this vitamin. Vitamin A is crucial for eye and skin health, as well as strengthening the immune system. In addition, it contains 267 mg of potassium and 36.7 mg of vitamin C, which is almost twice as much as in pineapple melon. It also contains smaller amounts of B-complex vitamins, which aid in metabolism and energy maintenance.

Pineapple, a tropical vitamin bomb

Pineapple is a tropical fruit known for its sweet and tangy taste and rich nutritional profile. In 100 g of pineapple, there are approximately 50 calories, slightly more than in melons. Pineapple is rich in vitamin C, with 47.8 mg per 100 g, representing about 80% of the daily requirement. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that protects cells from free radicals and strengthens immunity.

Additionally, pineapple contains the enzyme bromelain, which aids in protein digestion and has anti-inflammatory properties. Studies show that bromelain can reduce pain in arthritis and accelerate wound healing (source: Journal of Medicinal Food, 2010). Pineapple also contains 109 mg of potassium, which is less than in melons, but still contributes to a healthy heart function.

What to choose?

If you want to take care of your eye and skin health, Cantaloupe melon with its high vitamin A content is an excellent choice. If you are looking for a fruit to boost your immune system, pineapple with its rich content of vitamin C and bromelain is the right choice. Pineapple melon falls somewhere in between. It is refreshing, low in calories, and full of potassium.

It seems that the best choice is a combination of both fruits, both in summer and now, in spring. Try pineapple in a fruit salad with melon and enjoy an explosion of flavors and vitamins regardless of the season.

The stars of tropical fruits are queens anytime.
